“Grocery” Diplomats Expelled from South Africa

No less than seventeen diplomats (from Lesotho and Malawi) are henceforth “personae non gratae” in South Africa for illegally selling alcohol. They have abused their privileges (being able to buy duty-free goods) to fuel the contraband alcohol market during the lockdown and temporary alcohol ban the country has put in place. It is understood that the South African Foreign Ministry has around two hundred official representatives from other countries also in its sights. There is an account of a diplomat who had bought almost two million euros’ worth of alcohol over three months… which may indicate possible links with organized crime.
