The Hallucinogenic Beer of the Wari

What better way to firmly establish your political ascendancy than to offer the people a nice hallucinogenic beer? Chiefs of the Wari, a pre-Inca civilization that existed from around 900 to 300 BC were in the habit of giving sumptuous feasts accompanied by a very special beer. A recent archaeological discovery has shown that vilca seeds, a powerful psychotropic, were mixed into “chicha”, an alcoholic drink similar to beer and made from Peruvian pepper berries. The “very mild and controlled” hallucinogenic effect produced allowed the Wari chiefs to impress local populations and forge links with them.
