The True Story of “Two-Buck” Wine

Trader Joe’s is a rather unusual supermarket chain that probably won’t be familiar to anyone who’s never set foot in the US. A special offer on a top-of-the-range wine sold at a loss and the unfortunate tale of Charles Shaw, a businessman with a love of French wine, were what firmly established the “Hawaian Shirt” brand and the famous “Two-Buck Chuck”. The story of the “two-buck wine” even comes with its own legend, built up around various theories until it turned into an urban myth, an economic reality about as American as the American dream can get.
