For a while now, rumours have been circulating about Yerba Mate: recent scientific studies now seem to have confirmed that it is probably dangerous. Despite its high antioxidant qualities, “Yerba Mate” tea, or rather its production and preparation method are apparently a potential danger to health, with a propensity to increase respiratory and digestive (lung, oesophageal, stomach, intestinal, pancreatic, liver, etc.) cancer risks.
Because it is traditionally made (its leaves are dried over a wood fire), Yerba Mate contains high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); it might, therefore, be a good idea to reconsider the leaf-drying technique so that the drink can be enjoyed to the full and without risks.
